The Spirits Are Out

The spirits are out around Savage Mill at this time of year, swirling in the brisk air and making their presence known in the quiet hallways and corners of the Mill. They conjure up memories of years past at this old cotton mill turned ornament factory turned shopping and dining destination.

The Carding Building, the four-story building adjacent to the Little Patuxent River, is a favorite haunt of many of our ghosts. A number of our tenants have attested to encounters over the years, as recorded in two “Spirits of Savage Mill” blog posts: Who Knows My Name? and Apparitions and Poltergeist.

Dogs See Dead People Too

More recently, Melissa Steiner, Chief Operating Officer for the Dresner Group, had an experience outside her office on the 3rd floor of the Carding Building. She relates:

“I brought my other dog, Teddy, into the office a couple weeks ago. Normally, nothing fazes him—but this time? Total opposite. We walked down to the bathroom to fill up the watering pail for the office floors when Teddy suddenly cowered flat to the ground. I looked over and… saw the ghost of the 3rd floor. She looked about 18, dressed in a white frilly apron, just standing there looking at us. Looked back and she was gone. Poor Teddy was so spooked he literally pooped himself. 😂 Needless to say, his career as my office assistant ended right then and there.”

Haunted Savage Mill

These and other unsettling stories are part of the legacy of this two-century-old business. Join one of our ghost tours for an in-depth look into the Mill’s history. Learn about working conditions during 19th century Savage, how they tie to the ghostly encounters today, and the cheeky little girl who loves tripping the living! Although both tours scheduled for Halloween night are fully booked, there are still tickets for this Saturday’s tour and tours on other Fridays and Saturdays in November. Get your tickets today!

Halloween Bash

For a more light-hearted take, stop by the Blind Pig Tavern this Halloween for an 80’s-Themed Halloween Party. Turn back time to the 80’s with The Pineapple Band and a signature costume contest at 8pm! There’ll be prizes for the best 80’s gear. (Prior to that, from 4-8 pm, kids in costume eat free.)

No matter how you choose to mark this change of season, we hope you make Savage Mill a part of your plans. A cornucopia of seasonal treats, gift ideas, classes and activities awaits. And best of all, Savage Mill is a thrilling, chilling destination awaiting your discovery and exploration!
