The sun is lower in the sky, dusk comes earlier each evening, and there’s a noticeable change to the air. The aptly-named “Ber” months – September, October, November and December – usher in the darkest, shortest, and eventually coldest days of the year.
What’s New Outdoors
Walking around outside the Mill and around the town of Savage, the change is evident in the natural world, awash in fall color. The sweetgum trees on Baldwin Common are among the first to start losing their leaves, decorating the park in a patchwork of muted autumn hues.
In sunny patches, goldenrod attracts insects such this intricate pearl crescent butterfly, readying itself for the winter ahead. Alongside the Terrapin Adventures ropes course, native spicebushes show off, their vibrant red berries (an edible allspice substitute) glowing under bright yellow leaves.
This time of year is a great chance to enjoy the outdoors. Why not organize a group of colleagues for a Terrapin Adventures team building afternoon or explore one of the numerous trails around Savage Mill?
Indoor Offerings
The transition is visible indoors as well, where shop owners are industriously preparing displays, menus, and activities. In the New Weave building, cozy sweaters and scarves beckon from inside jules + kate while a warm display of home goods triggers thoughts of cooking with family and friends. The stylish clothing and boots on display at upscale resale boutiques Charity’s Closet and Charity’s First Picks present an opportunity for a wardrobe refresh, even on a budget.
Curl up with a used book or peruse the record collection at The Bonnie Wee Bookstore.
Savage Mill tenants are putting together workshops, classes, and activities to enrich your life. Paint nights, printing and journal workshops, body scrub and candle-making classes, and jewelry design events are just a sample of all that’s being planned over the coming months. Visit our events calendar for a comprehensive listing.
Food and drink are another highlight of this season. Themed dinners with wine tastings at Boyd Cru bring people together, while harvest-themed lattes and desserts at Roggenart and intriguing cocktails at Dive Bar & Grille pay homage to the season, resplendent with flavors of cinnamon, pumpkin, apple, cranberry, and more.
Fall is also the return of the popular Friday and Saturday night Savage Mill Ghost Tours. Journey with a guide through the Mill’s corridors learning about the history of the Mill and the ghosts that are said to haunt the buildings to this very day.
Don’t miss the holidays at Savage Mill! From the “cabinet of curiosities”-themed Girls Night Out on Thursday, October 23, to the month-long Yuletide festival that commences on Small Business Saturday (Nov. 29), there’s lots of entertainment for all ages. We look forward to seeing you during the Ber months!
